Well, it started like this... I
was a whiner but a good kid. At least that's what my parents
told me. I grew up in Washington DC in a very
rationally
challenged
environment. My Mom made me nervous, "Don't do this, don't
do that". My Dad taught me how to "Take charge," and my poor
little Brother well, he was target practice! We had Emotion!
Big Emotion!
We dealt with
everything very loudly and passionately. So as I grew older
and "whining, crying" and "stomping of feet" fell out of
fashion for adults, I transferred my energy to what I like
to call Enlightenment. Ok, so if I can just reach one
person...!
It actually happened as an accident but, I like to think it
was destiny, in 1986. While working in the film
post-production industry in New York, I suddenly developed a
case of comedic talent and decided I must take on surfing.
Besides, I had searched long enough for a glimmer of light.
Tanning is tough in the Big Apple!
So I was off to Los Angeles, to play in the sand, watch the
sun set over the pacific, and reach for the stars.
Literally. My book of autographs will astound! Actually, I
had a secret desire to be a filmmaker, but that's more than
you wanted to know, isn't it?
Anyway, hoping to inspire a new career with a move, I
decided to take up residence in beautiful Manhattan Beach.
It was perfect, and the waves looked great! I was just about
to pick up a board and go, when I got a call from a friend
of a friend, regarding a job opportunity. Work? Already? I
was just about to hang ten!
I had no idea this job would be located at Capitol Records,
in their music promotion department. Can anybody say
The
Beatles? So, with no
experience other than my true love of music, I was armed and
ready to go! Oh, I listened to music all of the time growing
up.The Beatles, and Elton John, were my favorites. I've
picked up a few more fav's since then, but more on that
later... It's amazing, the incredible music I've been
exposed to!
Finally, the day came for my
interview. I pulled up to a really cool building shaped like
a stack of records on Hollywood & Vine. I thought I'd
seen it before in a movie. As I remember in one scene a girl
leaps out of a window...STOP it! I met with the department heads, the
one's who ran the pop promotion department. It was a cool,
casual environment. I asked a lot of questions and they
didn't seem to mind so it really felt natural for me to be
there. A few days later, still figuring I'd be selling hemp
bracelets, I got a call instead, Hello...I had gotten THE JOB!! National
Secondary Promotion Manager! I called small market radio
stations all over the country to talk about the newest
Capitol Records releases. I loved it, what a blast. I took
to my job like a fish in water!! A great person once said
this to me, "This will be the beginning of a wonderful
career in the music industry!" It was!
Fourteen years have past since then, I've enjoyed working at some great
record labels. I've learned a lot over the years, and I've worked
with some of the best people in the business. Now, I have my own little
company and I call it Big Emotion Promotion and Marketing. I work with
radio stations and other industry professionals in the format known as Adult Album Alternative Rock.
This ground breaking
arena for new music has been around for a few years consisting of
commercial and non-commercial radio located nationwide. You may be
listening to one right now! It's fun working with this genre of music.
The best songwriters, musicians, and industry people comprise this
eclectic group.
I really love what I do,
especially helping an artist get heard! Sometimes I get a
little emotional about it all, but that's just how I am. Oh
yeah, I still whine, but the good news is that it's
acceptable in the music industry!!
